YOUR family customs

Elie Wiesel came from a Jewish religious tradition of thousands of year which included many daily and weekly rituals. He was very close to his family and faith at the beginning of the book.

Does your family have any traditions that you do each year, perhaps for holidays or special occasions? What are the traditions and why do you do them?

  3. My family does. Every Christmas eve i spend it with my mom and that side of the family. First i get all my gifts from my mom, then go to my aunts, then go to my memas. Then i sleep at my dad's christmas eve and get my gifts from him normally on christmas. Then we go to my aunts. This is done every year and hasn't changed for a few years. We do this so i get to see my whole family and get to spend equal time with them.

  4. My family and I do not really do any traditons during the year. During the holidays we just get together and have some parties. My only rituals are me waking up in the morning. I wake up and take a shower and then catch the bus.

  5. One tradition that my family has is that every Sunday my dad, aunt, uncle, cousins, grandparents, and I go to my great-grandparents house to visit. We eat lunch together and me and my cousins usually play soccer or football outside in the summer or video games or board games together in the winter while all the adults sit in the living room and talk.

  7. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas my family meets down at my Grandfathers house. My relatives come in from different states and we all enjoy eachothers company. Every summer, the third weekend of July, we have a family reunion. Hundreds of people show up at the family reunion and its one of the best weekends of the summer. My family is very close and spending time together is important to us.

  11. Every Christmas Eve my family always makes homemade pizza and watches " National Lampoons Christmas Vacation". It sounds dumb but we've been doing it for many years now. Another rital i have is every morning, i always check if I have any text messages from the night before and plug my phone in because i always forget to charge it at night time. I have many more ritals but it would probably take up the whole page. :)

  12. I have many family traditions. This being because i have a very large, and close family. My favorite one is in the summer, my whole side of my moms family goes on vacation to Ocean City Maryland. I have been going evey year since i was five. My cousins and i are all really close and we love to do fun things together. The usual day consists of waking up early and renting bikes to ride on the boardwalk, laying on the beach til about 3, then getting ready, going out to eat for dinner, mini golfing, then walking the boardwalk. We do thise because we are all really close and love spending time with each other. We always have a good time and we are always laughing. My family may be a little crazy sometimes but i wouldnt have it any other way.

  14. Every Easter my family and I go to my grandma's to eat. My grandma gives all of us this eatable-cardboard religious paper, which we break up into pieces. We then pass a piece of it to each of my family member. Each of us eat the others' pieces and then pray. Next, we each take a colored egg and take turns cracking them, whoever wins gets the lottery ticket for that nights' game.

  17. My family has a nearly a hundred traditions. Every Sunday my family and my uncle and cousins go over to my grandma's house for dinner. Every summer my family and my uncle's family go to Lynn Run up in Ligonier and play in the creek and have a pic nic. Every major holiday like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, my family and all of my aunts and uncles and cousins go over to my grandma's house for a big dinner. One last major tradition is every New Year's Eve me and my brother and sister stay overnight at my grandma's house and stay up to watch the ball drop.

  18. My family has a few traditions that we do each year for holidays and special occasions. One tradition that we have is going to my Baba's (grandma's) house in Michigan for vacation each summer. We stay with her for a week each year. We go fishing, swimming, and ride bikes every time we go. Another tradition that I have is watching The Wizard of Oz with my mom, Aunt, and Baba every Thanksgiving. We all watch The Wizard of Oz on the same day, even though we're in three different states. We watch it together, so we can feel connected, even though we're far apart. Finally, my family goes to my pap's house on Christmas every year. We eat dinner together and then play games. One game that we always play is to guess how many jellybeans are in the jar. I pretty much always win. Then we go back to my house and open presents. When we unwrap the gifts, we throw the paper in the middle of the floor and put catnip in it for my cats to roll around in. We have a blast! My family is very close and we have many traditions that we've developed over the years.

I haven't taken part in this tradition as I have only been part of the family for a month now. My foster mom has told me that this is a very big part of her summer and she wants me to become a part of it and as part of the family it is something that I look forward to doing this summer.

  28. On Christmas Eve I go over my grandma's house for fish and spaghetti. We do this because it is an Italian ritual and my grandma came from Italy at a very young age. After dinner we open presents and play bingo. Bingo isn't the most exciting game but it's nice to be around a lot of family and have fun.
