At the end of the book
Of Mice and Men George shoots Lennie in the head. Why do you believe George chose this action of all possible alternatives? Was it selfless or selfish? Fully explain your view to try to persuade others to your side of the argument.
I think he shot Lennie so that he wouldnt have to go to jail and be tortured. None of the other guys would have believed George if he told them Lennie didnt mean to harm or kill anyone, the other guys just wanted revenge. I think this was an act of selflessness because he quickly killed Lennie rather than letting him get tortured by Curly and the others.
ReplyDeleteI thinl that George could have told Lennie its time for them to go different ways other than shooting him. This was selfish of George, ge always said how Lennie was holding him back thats why he did what he did.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the book i think that George shot Lennie for a reason. He knew that they were friends and it was only right for a friend to shoot him, in this case, Lennie needed to be shot. I think it was selfless becuase George was thinking about how Lennie would survive and knew that he couldnt, he never listened, kept on killing things and was just retarted. I think it was good that George shot him, if not him then someone else would of.
ReplyDeletei think george did this because he is selfless. he gave lennie everything he had as he was taking care of him, and maybe just couldln't stand to see him suffer. I think that he did it for the love that he had of lennie. he didn't want to watch lennie suffer anymore than he already has. if you helped out a friend as much as george helped lennie, you wouldn't want to see that friend suffer, neither did george. George put lennie out of his misery completely.
ReplyDeleteGeorge chose to shoot Lennie because if he went to jail he would most likely get picked on and Curley was going to find him and shoot him no matter what. I think that Georges actions were selfless because it was something he had to do. if he wouldnt have shot Lennie, he would have felt guilty for the fact the Curley would have been the one to kill him out of anger.

I think this because if George didn't kill Lennie then someone else was going to do it anyways, and it was better that Lennie was happy and with George in his final moments than with Curly or someone who hated him.
ReplyDeleteI think George chose this action because it would be the one Lennie has to endure less pain. It was selfless because face it if he wanted to keep their dream alive he would have to keep Lennie alive. Now that Lennie is dead how were they supposed to get a ranch. So by killing Lennie he took his reality back to a dream.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the book, George shoots Lennie in the back of the head with a gun. I think he chose this because it was something he had to do. I'm sure he didnt really want to do it, and he probably thought of many more possible outcomes, but this to him, seemed like the best way to overcome the issue. He was being selfless because he not only did it for everyone else who wanted Lennie shot, but it was best for Lennie. Lennie would have gotten in more trouble anyways and would prob live with the pain, even though he might not fully remember. George knew this was the best thing because he would be putting Lennie in a better place. He also was protecting himself from any harm or danger, and many would think that is being selfish, but since when is looking after yourself when its necessary being selfish?
ReplyDeleteI think George was selfless when he shot Lennie in the head. If he hadn't of shot Lennie then Lennie would've been lynched anyway if Cury and the other ranch-hands found him.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the death of Lennie was a good decision. Lennie would have had a hard time in jail or a mental institution because I dont think anyone quite understands him like George. I think George did this for Lennie's good. I always understand why people believe George was selfish. I think he could of also killed him because Lennie was holding him back from his dream. He couldve had a much better life if he didnt always have to look after Lennie.
ReplyDeleteI believe that George shot Lennie in the back of the head because he thought back to how Carlson killed Candy's dog. Carlson talked about how he was going to shoot it in the back of the head and about how it would be painless for it. George would have wished Lennie to die in the least painful way possible and this was the best that he could do.
ReplyDeleteI believe that killing Lennie was an act of selflessness because George and Lennie were good friends and George would not want Lennie to suffer what he would have to if George let him live. You can tell how much trouble George had killing Lennie and that he didn't want to because as he aimed the gun at Lennie's head his hand was shaking a lot.
I think George chose this action becasue he knew that he might be a danger to other people. I think its a little bit of both selfless and selfish. I think its both because he could of done it for lennie or he could of done it for the others to.
ReplyDeleteI believe George did this because it really was the best possible alternative. George knew everyone was out to get Lennie and no matter what he was probably going to get shot. Like Candy said about how he wish he would have shot his dog and not have let a stranger do it. I think that is exactly how George felt. In all means, George's action was out all all selfless. George was putting himself before all the ranchers and doing what was necessary. Lennie really ment a lot to Geore and that is why he had to do the shooting himself.
ReplyDeleteI believe this was selfless of George. George didn't want Curly to shoot Lennie but believed killing him was best. George tried to make it as painless on Lennie as possible. He helped him be happy in his last couple moments of life by having him visualize their dream. I think George was being selfless.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why I think that George chose this action, to kill Lennie himself is just simply because he didn't really have a choice. Because George didn't want Curly to kill him so he did the problem himself. I think that its selfless because he did his best friend a favor.
ReplyDeleteI think George chose to shoot Lennie rather than choosing any of the other possible alternatives because he knew that Lennie was in danger and was going to eventually be killed. He wanted Lennie to live happily until the very last moment and didn't want Lennie to be killed by someone who hated him. I think his action was selfless. He was thinking of Lennie's life before himself. He wanted what was best for Lennie, rather than thinking of how he could make his life better. He could have killed Lennie to be able to reach his American dream, but I strongly believe George killed Lennie out of the kindness of his heart.
ReplyDeleteI feel that George had only shot Lennie out of selfishness. In my opinion, I think that George had set this whole thing up from the beginning as if he knew what he was doing. Why would George give him such a descripted plan on where to go and what to do if he messed up? He knew Lennie would get in trouble and and didn't want to deal with anymore. He wanted his American Dream and nothing was going to stand in his way anymore.
ReplyDeletei believe that george shot lennie only for the fact that curly or one of the guys could have gotten to him first. its kind of like candy and his dog, he said that he wishes he would have shot the dog himself and i think that george shot lennie so he wouldnt feel like candy and i think that that's what was going through his mind as he was getting ready to pull the trigger. i think george was doing out of the act of selflessness...if he would have let someone else kill lennie, i think he would have tried to stop the person who would kill him because he's so used to getting him out of trouble and it would be harder on him to see someone he's been with for such a long time that he would just do it without thinking twice.the book would have had a different ending.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do not think think Lennie deserved to be killed i think it was selfless of George to do what he did, even though i can't believe he did it. Lennie was George's bestfriend there is no question in my mind, he did a lot for Lennie, they went through a lot together. So I think George did the right thing.. He was looking out for Lennie so he was not tortured by anyone else.
ReplyDeleteI think George was placed in a tremendously dangerous situation for both himself and Lennie, and he knew that if the men found Lennie that Curly would surely shoot and kill George, and I also believe that George didn't think that he would make it out alive if he tried to escape with Lennie because of the furious men that followed. I think it was somewhat of a selfish decision, but I also believe it was more of a selfless act than selfish. I think it would only be selfish if he really truly wanted Lennie out of his life, but he didn't he had so much trouble raising the gun to Lennie's head, and he did say cruel things but it was only because he was travelling around with a guy who didn't have much sense and sometimes got annoyed. I only think it was a little selfish becuase a fully selfless decision would make him risk his life trying to get away with Lennie alive.

ReplyDeleteim not real sure why george chose this over all other alternitives. i think he might have done it though becasue only thing lennie ever though about was bunnies and dead rats and thats not really any "good" life so mabey thats why lennie did it. so i think this was selfless.
ReplyDeletei think that it was selfless because all lennie was doing was making more people hate him for his actions. and being lennies best friend i think gorge thought it would be better for him to put lennie out then someone else doing it just like the dog incident i think candy woud of felt better if he did it rather than carlson doing it becuse in both cases the one who should of shot should of been the one who killed them..... other things gorge could of done was ran again to a diffent town but then this could of just happend agian

ReplyDeleteGeorge chose this course of action because it was what was best for Lennie. Had George not been the one to kill him some one else would have and it would have torn George apart to see him killed by some one that hardly knew him. To me what George did was selfless becasue had he done it for himself he would have done it a long time ago. He cared about Lennie and that is shown in the simple fact that he allowed Lennie to go around with him and that he didn't just abandon Lennie showed a lot about George.
ReplyDeleteI myself think that it was a little bit of both. It was a little bit of personal gain because throught the hole book George tells Lennie how much better he would be without him. It can also be a selfless act because Lennie was gonna die either way. In my opinion George could have killed Lennie himself or let even worse things happen with Curly

ReplyDeleteI think George chose this path because he was thinking of the safety of others. i think he was selfless because he really liked Lennie, he knew that Lennie meant no harm and the murder was an accident but this was the second dime something like this happened and he didn't want it to happen again that and also if he didn't shoot Lennie there and then Lennie could have been found and shoot anyway or even lynched so this way Lennie did not know death was coming and died happy imagining his and Georges dream.

ReplyDeleteI don't believe that it was a selfish move at all. I think that if George would have let Lennie return to the ranch he would have been tortured and eventually killed. I think George killing Lennie was a better move because they were so close.
ReplyDeletei think that George chose to shoot Lennie in the back of the head while Lennie was distracted because Lennie would not know what was going on and becuase it would be one of the quickest and would cause the least pain for Lennie.I believe that George shooting Lennie was selfless because even though having Lennie around was difficult for George, Lennie was George's best friend. Why would you want to shoot your best friend for no good reason? George knew that Lennie was going to make George's life more difficult, but what is life without challenges? George's actions were selfless because he was doing what would be best for Lennie, and if George didn't do it, someone who hated Lennie would(Curly), and just like Candy with his dog, George didn't want someone who hated Lennie to be with Lennie in his last moments.
